Money!

On-campus jobs

Another source of support is the variety of on-campus jobs. These vary in wage and type. Most jobs pay you minimum wage. Those that require special skills (or hard to fill) pay a bit more. Some of these are listed below:
  • Office worker - answer phones, make copies, run errands.
  • Lab assistant - attend class like others but walk around and help students having trouble with their work. Typical classes that require lab assistants in CSIS include: CSC199 Introduction to Information Technology (the most), CSC145 Introduction to Programming I, CSC245, CSC232 Visual Basic Programming I. All of these classes require that you first pass them with an "A" (yes, we hire the best!). This position pays $0.50 more than minimum wage. Please check with our secretary
  • Lab worker - this is slightly different from the previous position. Here you monitor open labs that are found across campus - library, dorms, curris center etc. Fill out this form and you may get called if there is a match.
  • Food services/Dining halls - this I am told pays even better. Please check with food services.
But getting them requires a little bit of work. In most (office worker) cases, the hiring is done by the secretary. It is best that you have your class schedule handy and go by as many offices as you can to see if your schedule matches their need. Here again, there are a couple of categories of employees: "Federal" and "University". If you are Federal, you are much loved! However, the amount of hours you can work is determined by the University's Financial Aid office. Check with them first. It helps if you can provide your potential employer with all of this information up front. If you are a "University" worker, the departments are constrained by the number of hours they can give you. For some of the specialized jobs, you must meet other requirements - course credit, grade etc.

All else being equal, secretaries will look to hire well-mannered individuals with a good work ethic. Showing that you are dependable, well-prepared and pleasant will (almost) guarantee you that on-campus job!
